About The history of The School of Mechanical Engineering (SME) can be traced to 1933. At that time, SME was developed in Guangxi University as the “Discipline of Mechanical Engineering”. In 1997, it merged with the School of Agricultural Engineering in Guangxi Agricultural University and became the SME in Guangxi University today. As one of largest and most diverse engineering schools in Guangxi University, SME offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in the fields of mechanical engineering. SME deliver programs through a wide range of international partners in ASEAN. Our undergraduate programs feature work-integrated learning, development of professional skills, and local and overseas employment opportunities. Our nationally-recognised scientific research is supported by top-level engineering laboratories and research centres. Staff in SME are committed to providing high-quality teaching and cutting-edge research, which strives to educate the next generation of engineers and aviation scientists who will solve problems to make the world a better place.

SME provides high-quality courses to undergraduate students, which combine theory, laboratory, project-based learning, work-integrated learning and other practical learning experiences to ensure graduates are highly sought after by employers within China and overseas. Our courses enable our students to work within their chosen field, and to transition smoothly to other engineering fields during their career. The contents and the lectures of our courses are always in top level. The undergraduate subject mechanical design, manufacturing and automation won the titles of "National Characteristic Subject" as well as the "National First-Class Undergraduate Subject"; the undergraduate subject energy and power engineering is the pilot subject of "Excellent Engineer Training" and the "Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Subject ". Both of the courses are "First-Class Courses" in Province. In recent years, School of Mechanical Engineering has won 7 top awards and one top award 1st award of teaching achievements. One staff won the title of "Famous Teacher in Guangxi Province", and many teachers won the title of "Excellent Teacher " awarded by Baosteel Co. Ltd.
Aiming at the requirement of academic frontier and regional development, the school cultivates students with solid theoretical foundation, outstanding innovation consciousness and ability to discover and solve key scientific problems of engineering, especially focusing on the cultivation of College Students' scientific and technological innovation ability, with remarkable results. Over the past decade, students from the school of mechanical engineering have won more than 1000 honors and awards at provincial level; More than 100 awards were awarded to national level discipline competitions (including 14 1st prize), such as one 1st prize in China's "Challenge Cup" extracurricular academic competition, and two bronze awards in the Challenge Cup China University Entrepreneurship plan competition. Two silver awards were titled in the “Internet+” college students' innovation and entrepreneurship competition, and three undergraduates won the "China Youth Science and Technology Award", which is the highest level in the Students' Scientific and Technological Innovation Award.
Higher Degree Research SME provides higher degree research (master and doctoral degrees) for graduates from all over the world in the following disciplines: 1) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering 2) Mechatronics 3) Mechanical Design and Theory 4) Vehicle Engineering 5) Micro/Nano Fabrication
Our research groups are empowered and supported to work together and collaborate with partners from industry, government, and community groups to create exciting opportunities and solve major challenges. There are in total 14 research groups covering the research areas and directions in the listed disciplines, such as Research Group of Micro/Nano Electro-mechanical System (MEMS), Research Group of Intelligent Manufacturing and Precision Engineering, and Research Group of Cleaner Production and Low-carbon Engineering.
In the past 5 years, SME held over 28 national research projects and more than 150 research projects at provincial level, and the funds of these projects have been more than 100 million RMB. SME won one-time National Scientific and Technological Progress award, 11 times of academic award in provincial and ministerial level; based on our achievements, we have published more than 70 SCI-indexed papers in JCR Q1 and obtained more than 500 invention patents.
People The diverse, multi-talented team of researchers in SME are changing the world for the better. Currently, the school has 163 teaching staff (including the Engineering Training Center of Guangxi University): 85 of them are full-time academic staff, 18 of them are PhD supervisor and 68 of them have senior titles. SME has a group of outstanding professors who are titled with "100 Person Program Scholar" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the "Expert Enjoying the Special Government Allowance of the State Council", "Bagui Scholar", "Guangxi Excellent Expert", the candidates for the "Hundred-Thousand Project" and "Guangxi Famous Teachers".
Also, SME has delivered a large number of excellent graduates for construction and industrial development of China. Today, most of them are experts in industry, government officials, enterprise leaders and technical backbone, such as Li Lin who is the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Feng Henggao-the vice chairman of the autonomous region, Lin Guoqiang-the vice chairman of the political association of the autonomous region, and Shen Jie-the 2nd prize winner of the national scientific and technological progress award.
Industry SME is committed to driving innovation and collaboration through our vast and growing industry partnerships. Our industry partners range from small companies to national leading enterprises including Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co. Ltd., Liugong Group Co. Ltd., Liuqi Co. Ltd., etc. By actively carrying out school enterprise cooperation, SME has realized the combination of school and enterprise, teaching and engineering. Up to now, 30 industry-university joint laboratories, 5 large-scale engineering training centers and 2 "factories in schools" and "factories in schools" have been developed with Liugong Group Co. Ltd., and Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co. Ltd. The engineering training centre developed with Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co. Ltd. is the " engineering training center" in national level. Through the in-depth cooperation among education, research and industry, SME provides a huge number of key technologies and specialists to domestic leading enterprises such as Yuchai, Liugong, Liuqi, Liugang and Nantang in the projects, such as the sucrose mechanical equipment and the hilly intelligent agricultural machinery equipment etc, which realizes the "mutual transformation" between scientific and technological achievements.
